Reiki. What is that?

About Reiki

  • Reiki is a complementary health care practice that supplements (does not replace) your other health care practices, including those provided and prescribed by licensed health practitioners such as doctors and nurses.

  • The goal of Reiki is to facilitate the body's own healing process.

  • Reiki energy is also referred to as "universal life force energy" or "ki."

  • Reiki restores the flow of life force energy through the body by promoting relaxation. Relaxation is believed to support the body's ability to heal.

What to expect during a Reiki session

  • In-person reiki: you remain fully clothed and will be asked to lie down on a table like a massage table. The traditional Reiki technique is a very light touch. If it is okay with you, I use this technique. If that does not work for you, I use a "hover" technique where hands hover just above the body. This is the technique that has been practiced more often in Western Reiki.

  • Distance reiki: you are in a comfortable, resting position during the duration of the session.

  • Whether we are in person or through distance, Reiki sessions last between 30-60 minutes. Reiki energy is guided by the needs of the body and that is why the session length varies.

  • Reiki practitioners are channels through which the universal life force energy, Reiki, flows. You may experience Reiki as heat, coolness, vibrations, tingling, sleepiness, relaxation, heaviness, light pressure, slight pulling, or nothing at all. There is no "right" or "wrong" way to experience Reiki.

Reiki is given for the purposes of wellness.

Reiki is not a substitute for medical treatment or medications. Mardi does not diagnose illness or disease. She does not prescribe medications or recommend supplements.
